Mission

The mission of Harlem Day Charter School is to use a partnership between educators, families, and community members to create a strong academic structure in which students learn basic skills in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and Spanish at levels that exceed New York State standards. Students are expected to achieve these high levels in an environment that values respect, compassion, critical thinking, and problem solving.

History
Harlem Day Charter School is an innovative alternative to the existing public school system. As provided by New York State law, the school is nonprofit and organized solely for the purpose of delivering a free, high quality education to public school students. Harlem Day Charter School was established by Sheltering Arms Childrens Service, an agency with over 30 years of experience operating early childhood education, daycare and after school programs in Central and East Harlem, and Benjamin V. Lambert, a successful real estate entrepreneur with a history of working closely with educational organizations. Mr. Lambert is a Trustee Emeritus of Brown University. He is also a Trustee of The Spence School, the Waterford Institute, and the Waterford School. Mr. Lambert is a board member of the Manhattan Council of Boy Scouts of America, the Robert Steel Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research, and Sheltering Arms Childrens Service.

In addition to a Board of Trustees that provides strong managerial and fiscal oversight, Harlem Day is fortunate to have a bright and modern school facility designed to encourage children to explore and learn, and a talented teaching faculty. All of these elements combine to make Harlem Day a uniquely strong charter school, poised for continued success.
